Benefits of Teaching in the USA
Participating in the teacher program in the USA offers numerous advantages to you. It also helps to improve your experience better than before:
- Educational and cultural enrichment: Teachers have to enhance their skills continuously. You can participate in cross-cultural activities and return home with new insights into U.S. teaching practices.
- Repeat participation: Teachers can join again if they have lived outside the U.S. for two years. It applies if they still meet eligibility requirements.
- Professional growth: Working in U.S. schools broadens your classroom experience. Also, it helps to strengthen your CV.
Host School Responsibilities
Schools hosting exchange teachers are required to:
- Involve teachers in cultural activities both within the school and the community.
- Monitor the teacher’s classroom performance and fulfilment of responsibilities.
Extensions and Duration
The standard program lasts three years.
- Host schools may request a one or two-year extension. But these must be for full years and are not automatic.
- Sponsors submit approved extension requests with supporting documents to the U.S. State Department. This must be done at least three months before the desired extension.
- There is no limit to the number of extensions that may be granted.
Visa Requirements – J1 Visa for Teachers
Teachers must secure a J1 visa for teaching opportunities in the USA. This visa allows full-time teaching and participation in cultural exchange programs.
Key points include:
- DS-2019 Form: This helps you through as your sponsor provides the certificate of sponsorship.
