Working Holiday Programs

YMS United Kingdom and WHP Ireland

These programs give young people a chance to live abroad for a short time. You can travel, work, and see what daily life feels like in a new country.

United Kingdom – Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS)

The Youth Mobility Scheme lets young adults from certain countries spend time living and working in the UK. It is open to ages 18 to 30, and up to 35 for a few nationalities.

You can study, work, or take on small self-employed roles. You cannot bring dependents or use public funds.

You must be a citizen of a participating country. This includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Monaco, San Marino, Iceland, Uruguay, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Some nationalities must enter a ballot first.

Most visas last up to two years. For people from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the stay can be up to three years. You must show at least £2,530 in savings. You can only take part once.

You may work in most roles, volunteer, or study. You cannot bring family, claim public funds, work as a pro athlete, or stay permanently.

Ireland – Working Holiday Program

Ireland’s Working Holiday Program lets young people travel through Ireland and take temporary work to support their stay. The main purpose is a long holiday. Work is only meant to help fund your trip.

If approved, you receive a Working Holiday Authorisation. It allows a stay of up to 12 months, or up to 24 months for Canadians.

The program is only open to countries with a working holiday agreement. You must apply before you enter Ireland.

Once you arrive, you register with immigration and receive your GNIB card, which lets you work.

You can take casual or short-term jobs. Some participants may be limited in how long they can work for one employer. You must show enough funds to support your stay when you begin.
